By noon, Ethel and Jane had visited three stores, sat on dozens of loveseats and found nothing that appealed to Ethel. She told the salespeople that she wanted something modern and stylish, but she hated the current styles and fabrics. She also hated the prices. She wanted an old-fashioned sofa like the one in her living room. Jane suggested finding a slipcover, but no. Ethel wanted a new sofa.

Resigned to a wasted day, Jane followed Ethel into another furniture store. This one specialized in living-room furniture. They walked past rows of reclining chairs, rocking chairs and couches. Everything looked like the furniture they’d already seen. They were about to leave when Jane spotted something with a classic tapestry print in the back of the store.

“Wait, Aunt Ethel. Let’s look at that furniture in the back.”

“I don’t think we’re going to find anything here, Jane. It all looks the same.”

“Let’s check it out anyway.” She made her way around rows of furniture to the back corner. A small living-room grouping of French country couch, chair and loveseat made a charming seating arrangement. The muted tones of the floral tapestry in greens and mauve would be a perfect complement to the glazed walls in the carriage house. A saleswoman came over to help them.

“This set is brand-new,” she said. “And all of the pieces recline.”

“Really?” Ethel asked.

“Sit down and see how you like it,” the woman invited.

Ethel sat on one side of the loveseat. Jane tried the other. Very roomy and comfortable, she thought. She pulled a lever in the side and her seat reclined. She leaned back.

“I like this. It’s wonderful.” She turned to Ethel. “What do you think?”

“Very nice,” Ethel said, but without much enthusiasm. “I suppose it’s out of my price range.”

The saleswoman picked up the tag, attached to the side. “Our Independence Day sale started today. It will run for ten days. This set is marked down forty percent.”

“I don’t want the whole set. I only want a loveseat.”

“We sell them separately or as a set. Would you like me to write up a quote for you?”

“Yes, please,” Jane said before Ethel declined. The woman excused herself, saying she’d be right back.

As soon as she was gone, Jane turned to Ethel. “This would be wonderful in your house, Aunt Ethel. The colors are great and the style is comfortable, yet elegant.”

“Do you think so? I get so confused.”

“I do. And your rug will look great with it. We can shop for accessories in Acorn Hill. The General Store has wonderful baskets, and Sylvia has a new assortment of lovely handmade pillows. And we might look for something lighter for your windows, like sheers or battenberg lace panels.”

“I can’t afford battenberg lace,” Ethel said.

“You’d be surprised. I saw some in a discount store last week.”

“I suppose we could look.”

When the saleswoman returned with a very reasonable price quote, Ethel declared that she would take the loveseat. When she inquired about delivery, they learned the store only went to Acorn Hill once a week and charged for delivery.
